What is stability of a joint?
When a joint is stable it holds itself easily in the desired static position and also moves correctly with minimal stress to the joint and maximum efficiency.
Why is this important?
When a joint is stable you will not get pain, you will move with greater ease, comfort and grace and you will exercise and play sport better. You will prevent wear and tear and injury to your joints. All the joints in the body need to be stabilised properly, from the neck, shoulder, mid spine, lower back, pelvis, hips, knees to the ankles.
What is core stability?
Core stability is the stability of the spine, pelvis, hips and shoulder girdle. There are a lot of misconceptions about core stability. It is not about sit ups or strong torso bracing type actions as many believe.
It is about establishing correct timing of firing of certain muscles along with adequate endurance and strength in the stabilising muscle system.
The muscle function of the hip affects the ankle, the muscle function of the shoulder affects the wrist, the pelvis affects the neck.
It is the dynamic balance in the whole body that gives a person good stability.
